Head of Engineering, C&I and DG – Connecticut

Hiring Company Overview:

Join a specialized infrastructure private equity firm that is integrated across the lifecycle of distributed energy and C&I solar projects in the U.S. and Europe.  With a portfolio spanning 16 states and two European countries, it has over 800MW of projects under construction or operational in its portfolio, a pipeline of 4+ GW of new projects, and has deployed over $1.2 billion of capital since inception.

This firm invests and develops greenfield solar projects at the DG and C&I levels through partner developers or corporate partners including ground mounted, rooftop, and carport solar.  Using an outsourced EPC, it completes construction of projects and then holds projects until an optimal time to exit.

Position Overview:

As the Head of Engineering, you will play a strategic and crucial role in selecting and advancing community-scale, C&I, and distributed generation solar energy projects.  You will have full engineering responsibility and impact across new project development & acquisitions, managing EPC contractors from creation of the SOW to the RFP process to project commissioning, and will provide professional advisory for asset management and optimization, as well as during the asset divestment process.

During project construction, you will visit project sites to check the progress and status of projects, serving as the owner’s eyes & ears on the ground.  You will interface with third-party EPCs, consultants, and other participants/stakeholders in project development and be the senior problem-solver when there are challenges faced by the general contractor, owner’s engineering representative, or other partners.

Job location: Fully remote from anywhere on the East Coast. Come into the office once per month for a couple days in Westport, CT.

Reporting: Fund Operating Partner and Co-Founder

Key Responsibilities:

• Attend portfolio planning and strategy meetings with senior leaders of the company
• Update senior management on the status of projects
• Support the Investment and Origination teams with technical-commercial opinions projects presented for development and/or investment
• Explain technical concepts, technical risks, and risk mitigation strategies to non-engineer members of the team such as business developers, project finance, and legal
• Review documentation created by the in-house design engineer and/or third party consultants such as conceptual design, detailed design, technical due diligence reports, interconnection pre-applications, IFP/IFC designs, and BOMs
• Interface with project partners such as general contractors and consultancies to generate the best project outcomes
• Review technical documents such as EPC contracts, studies, bills of material, and material specifications and warranties
• As needed, propose modifications to optimize project returns via change in design, change in materials to reduce cost, change in materials to improve power output, change in installation methods, or other performance improvement measures
• Reach out to utility companies, electric co-ops, or other authorities involved on an as needed basis to verify requirements for interconnection or other clarifying information

Requirements:

• 10+ years of power generation project engineering, likely 15+ years over all career experience
• Proven ability of high-level problem solving
• Skillful at managing third party partners such as EPCs, general contractors, and technical consultancies
• Willing to travel one day weekly, not always overnight.  Most project sites are in the Northeast and within driving distance or train distance of the headquarters

Other:

• Procore experience a plus
• Knowledge of electrical codes, especially in New York is a plus
• Solar experience is a plus
