Market Insights: Commercial Redox Flow Batteries

Have you ever wondered if commercial redox flow batteries (RFB) for energy storage systems (ESS) exist?  Well, in partnership with my friend Naphtal Haya on the website Energy Storage Chronicles you can read about them here.  The article covers key commercial trends in the RFB industry.

Here is a quick summary of the 5 companies he dives into and their products. Definitely read the article for the technical specifications and key competencies!

  1. ESS Inc. — U.S. based design and manufacturer of iron flow batteries (IFB). Their IFB is a hybrid flow battery and they produce C&I and utility-scale versions.
  2. Invinity Energy Systems Plc —Founded through the merger of UK-based RedT Energy and U.S.-based Avalon Battery, it not only manufactures vanadium RFBs (VRFBs) but also serves as an EPC for VRFBs globally.
  3. Largo Inc — A Canadian vertically integrated vanadium company with a mine in Brazil that also manufactures VRFBs.  It has a 6.1 MWh project in Spain with Enel Green Power and a 3MWh demonstration project with National Grid in Massachusetts.
  4. RedFlow Limited — An Australian RFB company producing zinc-bromide RFBs for residential, C&I, and utility-scale.
  5. VRB Energy Inc— A Canadian VRFB maker that is owned 90% by Ivanhoe Electric, and is focused on utility-scale storage.

Talent Insights: Potential-based hiring

With technology for renewable energy constantly advancing and the applications for products continuing to evolve, it is not surprising that there are many skill gaps when completely new types of jobs are created.

When most hiring managers craft a job description, it typically has a mix of hard skills and soft skills that are broken down into must-haves (ex: the requirements section) and nice-to-haves (sometimes written as a description of the ideal applicant profile).  However, if you know that the skills required for your cutting edge product or service are so niche that making them a must-have would restrict your candidate population so much that hiring would be nearly impossible, what alternatives do you have?

One alternative is Potential Based Hiring (PBH) versus Skill Based Hiring (SBH).  The concept might sound intuitive: rather than hire someone based on their educational credentials or skills garnered in previous jobs, the hiring manager will look to hire someone based on their potential to grasp the new product’s technology or the service offering.  The more difficult question is how to implement it.

Here are some ideas of how to integrate PBH into your recruitment process:

  1. Behavioral interview questions.  Ask a candidate about previous experiences where they had to quickly grasp a new concept.  Ask questions gauging their interest in continuous education and self-mastery of complex ideas.
  2. Psychometric testing. Work with a psychometric testing agency to craft a test that teaches someone a new concept quickly and tests their ability to apply that concept.  This could be numeric, patterns, logic, written, or oral.
  3. Reference checks. If a former boss is willing to share insight on the applicant’s ability to learn, process feedback, and share knowledge, this give valuable insight into the applicant’s potential while employed with your company.

We hope to be a resource to our readers. Please don’t hesitate to reach out for more ways to integrate PBH into your hiring process.
